THE VERSE
2 CORINTHIANS 4:16
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.”
CONTEXT
Paul is describing the suffering he and his fellow workers experienced while serving Christ.
Earlier in the chapter, he speaks of being troubled, perplexed, persecuted, and struck down.
Yet they were not abandoned by God.
Paul could acknowledge the reality of suffering without allowing it to determine his hope.
WHAT IT MEANS
“Our outward man is perishing” recognizes the weakness, suffering, and mortality of our physical bodies.
“The inward man is being renewed day by day” points to God’s continuing work within His people.
Paul does not contrast a difficult life with an easy one.
He contrasts what is temporary and fading with the spiritual work of God that continues within us.
The following verses point even further toward eternal glory and the unseen things that last.
WHAT IT DOES NOT MEAN
This does not mean Christians should ignore suffering or pretend pain is insignificant.
Paul himself experienced severe hardship.
His confidence was not based on circumstances improving or on his own ability to remain strong.
Christian hope rests in God and His eternal promises.
WHAT THIS CALLS US TO
Do not judge God’s faithfulness solely by your present circumstances.
You may experience weakness outwardly while God continues His work within you.
When hardship makes you want to lose heart, continue looking toward Christ and what is eternal.
Trust God to sustain and shape you even through seasons you would not have chosen.

REFLECTION
Are difficult circumstances causing you to lose sight of what God is doing within you?
Where do you need to place your hope in what is eternal rather than what you currently see?
PRAYER
Lord, keep me from losing heart when I feel weak or discouraged.
Renew me day by day and teach me to depend on Your strength rather than my own.
Help me to see beyond my present circumstances and trust what You are doing within me.
Keep my eyes fixed on Christ and on what is eternal.
