WEEKLY WORD - PHILIPPIANS 3:8

PHILIPPIANS 3:8

CHRIST ABOVE ALL

THE VERSE

“Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ”

Philippians 3:8 (NKJV)

CONTEXT

Paul writes to the Philippian church while imprisoned for the gospel.

In Philippians 3:4–6, he describes his former religious credentials, including his heritage, knowledge of the law, and zeal.

These were things he once considered valuable.

But after coming to know Christ, Paul no longer places confidence in them.

In verses 7–9, he explains that knowing Jesus is greater than anything he previously counted as gain.

WHAT IT MEANS

“I also count all things loss”

Paul no longer measures his standing before God by personal achievements or religious credentials.

“For the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord”

Knowing Christ is of greater worth than anything Paul could accomplish or possess.

“That I may gain Christ”

Paul's desire is to belong to Christ and be found in Him, possessing righteousness through faith rather than his own works.

WHAT IT DOES NOT MEAN

This verse does not teach that possessions, work, or accomplishments are inherently sinful.

It does not require every Christian to abandon their responsibilities.

Nor does it suggest that giving up enough things earns salvation.

Paul's confidence rests in Christ and His righteousness, not personal sacrifice.

WHAT THIS CALLS US TO

Consider where you place your confidence.

Achievements, possessions, and recognition can become sources of identity.

But none can make us righteous before God.

Value Christ above everything else and allow that priority to shape your decisions.

Christ is not simply part of our lives. He is our greatest treasure.

RELATED SCRIPTURE

  • Matthew 6:33: Seek first God's Kingdom and righteousness.

REFLECTION

What are you placing your confidence in?

Does knowing Christ matter more to you than worldly achievement or recognition?
