OBT WEEKLY VERSE - ISAIAH 53:5
March 30, 2026
THE VERSE
ISAIAH 53:5 - “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.”
CONTEXT
Isaiah is writing a prophecy about the coming Messiah.
This was written centuries before Jesus, yet it describes His suffering in detail.
The focus is not only that He would suffer, but why He would suffer.
This passage points directly to the purpose of the cross.
WHAT IT MEANS
“He was wounded for our transgressions” shows that His suffering was in our place.
He took the penalty that belonged to us.
“The chastisement for our peace” means He bore judgment so we could be reconciled to God.
“By His stripes we are healed” speaks first to spiritual restoration, not physical relief
WHAT IT DOES NOT MEAN
This does not mean we earn forgiveness through suffering or effort.
Christ alone paid the full penalty for sin.
It does not promise immediate physical healing in every situation.
The primary meaning is reconciliation with God, not temporary comfort.
WHAT THIS CALLS US TO
The cross confronts us with the reality of sin.
It also reveals the mercy of God in providing a substitute.
This calls for repentance, not indifference.
To follow Christ is to turn from sin and live under His authority.
