OBT WEEKLY WORD - PSALM 42:1

THE VERSE

PSALM 42:1

“As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.”

The psalmist is experiencing deep discouragement and separation from worship with God’s people.

He remembers going with others to the house of God, but his present circumstances are very different.

His soul is troubled, and he openly brings that struggle before God.

In the middle of his distress, his deepest longing is for God Himself.

A thirsty deer depends upon water for life.

The psalmist uses that picture to describe the depth of his longing for God.

His desire reaches beyond wanting relief from difficult circumstances.

He longs for fellowship with the living God Himself.

This does not mean genuine faith always feels spiritually strong.

The psalmist openly expresses discouragement, grief, and questions throughout Psalm 42.

Longing for God is not about producing an emotional experience.

It is recognizing that God Himself is our deepest need.

We can easily seek God primarily for answers, comfort, or changed circumstances.

Psalm 42 redirects our desire toward God Himself.

Bring your struggles honestly before Him while continuing to seek Him.

Desire the Giver, not only His gifts.

Do you desire God Himself, or mainly what you want Him to provide?

What has been competing with your hunger for Him?

Lord, deepen my desire for You.

Keep me from seeking You only for what You can give me.

When I am discouraged or spiritually dry, teach me to continue turning toward You.

Help me to know You, trust You, and desire Your presence above everything else.
